The Peregrines capitalized on a high-flying defense and clutch three-point shots to come up with an 83-37 win against the visiting Judson University Eagles on Saturday, Feb. 6.
Judson won the opening tip-off, but the PUC defense went to work immediately, stopping the Eagles offense in its tracks and feeding the ball to senior Sara Keilman for the first points of the game. The quick turnaround foreshadowed the rest of the afternoon, as the Peregrines racked-up a 17 point lead with five minutes to go in the first half; setting the score at 30-13.
The Peregrines defense continued to batter the Eagles shooters, keeping them from the paint and holding them to 8-30 from the field in the first half. Keilman led the Peregrines defense in the first half, claiming three steals and followed by freshman Amanda Gaskin with two for the half.
This effort, combined with solid passing under the net, helped the Peregrines to a 42-19 lead at the half, capped off by a two-point jumper from freshman Tierra Turner right at the buzzer.
PUC continued the rout, right out of the break, with a steal from freshman Alex Starr leading to points from Gaskin. The Eagles could not find their wings in the second half, as the Peregrines kept Judson to only 18 points in the last twenty minutes of play.
"It was a total team-effort," Coach Tom Megyesi said. "I was very pleased with our defense."
The Peregrines defense dominated the pecking-order for the duration of the game, holding the Eagles to 16-71 overall and only 4-32 from beyond the arc.
"It was us playing good defense," junior MeMe Harris said. "We were forcing them to turn the ball over."
Peregrine scorers were not without brilliance either, sinking 5-6 treys in the second half and hitting all eight free-throws in the same period. Stiff defense and a scoreboard surplus even some of the allowed younger Peregrines to try their wings on the court.
"I was excited," freshman Samekia Coaxum said. "We all played well - we did what we were supposed to do." Coaxum finished with a total of four points; all scored within the final moments of the contest.
"I like to see when the freshmen get in and make baskets," Harris said. "I'm happy to get momentum for my teammates by passing to them and building their confidence."
The Peregrines double-digit scorers were Keilman with 16, sophomore Stephaine Beck with 13 and Starr with 11. The win marked the first time in nearly ten seasons that PUC has defeated Judson two times consecutively, and it pushed the Peregrines to an overall record of 12-12, and a second-place conference record of 5-3.
