Samekia Coaxum already made up her mind as a junior in high school. Traveling to a new state to attend school at PUC and possibly walking on the women's basketball team.

"I had family that lived up here and decided this was the place for me," Coaxum said.

Graduating May 25, 2009 from Desoto High School in Stone Wall, Louisiana, Coaxum was on her way to Indiana two days later on May 27.

"I had already looked around and gone through the orientation. This was like a year in the planning," Coaxum said.

In the few months she has lived here, Coaxum noticed some differences between Northwest Indiana and Louisiana.

"You get southern comfort, 'Hi everybody', up here you really can't say hi to everybody," Coaxum said. "In Gary there is a certain way to do it, but you can't really say hi."

Coaxum has found a friendly bunch in her teammates though.

"Every one is friendly and supportive," she said.

She showed up at one of the open gyms in June and earned a roster spot for the season.

Coaxum believes the season is going well, but said the work is not done.

"We want to win the national and conference tournaments," she said.

Acknowledging the tough non-conference schedule, Coaxum said it prepared the team mentally and physically for the conference schedule.

With regards to Cardinal Stritch snapping a five game winning streak on Jan. 3, she thought it would be a different outcome.

"When we played them it was a whole different story. They're coming to our house," Coaxum said.

Moving forward in her playing career, her ideal role on the team would be the all-around helper. She wants to fill the shoes of whoever Coach Tom Megyesi and her teammates need her to fill.

Even if she did not get a walk-on spot, Coaxum said she still would have come here. It was the positive attitude of the people.

"Right when I came here[PUC] everybody was nice to me," Coaxum said.

A human services major, she plans on becoming a family counselor someday.
