Big Game party is 'super'
Issue date: 2/8/10 Section: Sports
Sunday's NFL championship game brought students of all walks of life together to watch the big game, eat some great food and support the Haven House Foundation.
Students were charged $2 and non-students $5, with all the proceeds going directly to the Haven House Foundation for Battered Women. According to Student Actvities Assistant Carol Wolfe, this event raised a total of $170.
"Not only are the students having fun, but they are doing good as well," Wolfe said.
According Wolfe, the turn out for this year's party was a pleasant surprise.
"The main thing is everybody has fun and they have enough to eat," she said.
According to Phil Miller, a junior majoring in Hospitality Tourism and Management, the party was a good time.
"I'd been to other school functions like this, but wasn't to sure how the turn out would be," Miller said.
Miller said he usually cheers for the Chicago Bears, but was rooting for the Saints during the game.
International students from Brazil Lorha Coelho and Prisala Rezende took this event as an opportunity to watch their first football game.
Coelho, a senior majoring in public relations, was surprised how big the event was.
"For the university to promote this kind of activity is very nice," Coelho said. "It is an opportunity for international students to learn more about U.S. culture."
Rezende, a senior majoring in journalism, said she loved her first experience with football. Rezende also mentioned that she thought donating all proceeds to Haven House was a great idea and could potentially spread awareness of other people's country.
Rezende said she was rooting for the Colts, because they were from Indiana.
