Through four losses, one freshman on the men's basketball team stands out.
Center Kameron Bright earned last week's Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference player of the week. He also gained a spot on the IU/PU Challenge All-Tournament team. Bright recorded 28 points, 10 rebounds and two assists in Calumet's game against IU Southeast. He averages 16 points and 10.3 boards per game.
According to senior guard Antonio McNeal, Bright could become unstoppable.
"He's got the size, the work ethic, [and] the techniques. He can really dominate," McNeal said. "He's a defensive threat also. By his junior year, he'll be unstoppable in the post if he continues like this and improves."
Bright feels amazed by what he has done. He is glad to prove what he has to offer the team.
"My output… it's better than I expected," Bright said. "In high school, I averaged about the same points and rebounds, but this is different. Overall, I'm just worried about getting in the paint. If I get there, I can score, rebound or pass it out to a teammate."
Coach Dan Voudrie noticed Bright's improvement and hopes the fire in Bright continues to burn.
"He's been very competitive. It's helped put him in position to be successful," Voudrie said. "It's not that I've put in him a place to succeed or that he knows everything about the plays. His aggressiveness has compensated for him not always knowing or being sure. He goes to the ball. That's the key down low."
In addition to his intensity, Bright said he is in the best shape of his life and still improves.
"The conditioning has helped a lot. I'm able to keep my intensity up. Because of college my mentality has changed. I'm able to turn my intensity off and on. I can find my spots and get to them. I'm in a scorer's mentality, but I know how to play team ball," Bright said.
Junior forward Mike Patton said Bright is a good player, but is also what he calls a gamer.
"A gamer really brings it on game days. He has a knack for that," Patton said. "He just seems more aware, more in tune. He's been excellent."
"He's been pretty good, for a freshman," Patton joked. "Really, he's been pretty good no matter what. He's been the energy lately, and that urgency will help."
Bright and PUC's next game will be against IU South Bend at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Fitness Center. The game can also be heard on WJOB 1230 AM.
