Despite minor microphone and computer issues, the Chinese Student Association went through with Chinese Star. The competition, held Nov. 15, consisted of singing songs in both Chinese and English and playing instruments.

Chinese Star took roughly two weeks to plan. CSA had to book the TV lounge in SUL, plan awards and set up in that time period. There were ten competitors in the singing contest.

Mechanical engineering student Weizhuo Zhao, of CSA, said Chinese Star earned its name because they consider each competitor a star in his or her own way. Zhao said the contestants showed courage by singing in front of an audience, despite whether they considered themselves good singers or not.

Zhao also thought the event was a good opportunity for the students to relax and show off their talents.

Each competitor and singer brought something different to the event. Tengliang Zhu, who was also a judge for the event, was the first person to sing. Zhu sang Andy Lau's "Zai Shuo Yi Ci Wo Ai No," or "Once Again, Say 'I Love You.'"

Ren Ren sang a song by Weiqi Fan and brought two students of hers to take part. Ren taught them the Chinese, singing and dancing previously.

A performer played guitar for his song, while another played a keyboard. Two out of the sixteen performances done were English songs, featuring Craig David's "Seven Days" and James Blunt's "You're Beautiful."

At the end of the event, the audience voted for whom they liked and the judges decided who won. Although all participants won an award, the first place group consisted of four male students: Yang Wang, Cai Wang, Yichen Wang, and Long Gao. Their winning performance was Zhong Yang Yue Tuan's "Huang He Da He Chang."

There are several programs CSA considers running for the Chinese New Year. Chinese Star, the Moon Festival, and homecoming showed individual skills of various students who may take part in the final programs in February.
