Last Wednesday's intramural flag football game was back-and-forth between the PUC Bears and Shake N Bake. In the battle of the two top teams in the league Shake N Bake emerged victorious.
Both teams came into Wednesday night's game with records of 3-1. Both teams also had specific strategies for the game.
"We knew they were fast, and we wanted to play solid defense," Shake N Bake quarterback Steve Gorman said. He is a junior electric engineering major.
The PUC Bears' strategy was less specific.
"We wanted to win every game," Marcus Summers, employee at the Fitness and Recreation Center and player on the PUC Bears said. "It hasn't been working out."
The PUC Bears started out with the ball but couldn't get a completion.
Gorman took advantage of the resulting turnover and ran the ball in for a touchdown on the second play. This was the first of four touchdown runs for Gorman.
"I just try to go the opposite way of my guys," Gorman said.
The PUC Bears then had a long touchdown pass followed by another touchdown run by Gorman.
Both teams scored on nearly every possession throughout the remainder of the first half, at which point the PUC Bears were leading 28-21.
"At the half I knew we had to come out and play better defense," Gorman said.
But the beginning of the second half didn't prove promising for Shake N Bake. On the first possession, Gorman threw an interception which resulted in a touchdown for the PUC Bears.
Gorman made up for this on the next possession with another touchdown run. He then threw a touchdown pass to tie the game at 35.
"I tried to get the momentum back," Gorman said.
The Shake N Bake quarterback then ran in another touchdown and threw another touchdown pass before the PUC Bears scored again. Shake N Bake was leading 49-42 with a minute left to play.
The PUC Bears had the ball for the last minute of the game but they couldn't execute.
"We had a lot of dropped passes," Summers said. "We didn't come through in the clutch."
Gorman "just wanted to get a win." He and his team will be heading into week 6 of the season with a record of 4-1.
"We're happy," Gorman said. "We came out on top."
