As fall weather gets colder, PUC students can take heart. Lady Peregrine Basketball is ready to tip off the season. The PUC women's basketball team will begin play on Nov. 5 at the Fitness Center as they take on Michigan Dearborn.
Entering the season ranked fourth in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference's preseason poll, the Lady Peregrines are looking to improve on last year's performance.
"We hope to continually improve our performance from season to season. Our first season we had seven wins, last year we won 12. We hope to improve on that," Coach Tom Megyesi said.
Topping the CCAC at 75.2 points per game last year, the Lady Peregrines finished with a record of 5-5 in the conference, with 12-18 overall record.
Leading the way are returning players and team captains Sara Keilman, Mimi Harris and Jennifer Britton.
"They are good leaders in that they try to encourage their teammates. They're very positive and they show what it takes to be a good student athlete," Megyesi said.
Harris and Britton will set the tempo as the backcourt starters for the Lady Peregrines.
Britton, a junior majoring in elementary education, led the CCAC, making 87 3-point attempts last year with a 42.2 percent average.
Harris, a junior majoring in medicine, ranked 2nd in the CCAC for assists last season. Also during the season, she hit the 10 assist mark three times.
Senior Sara Keilman, a business management major, was a steady contributor last season with 6.2 points per game and pulling down 6.0 rebounds per game.
Megyesi said that the Lady Peregrines would continue again play a tough schedule.
"By playing tougher teams, it will expose our weaknesses and make us a better team at playoff time," Megyesi said.
The Lady Peregrines intend on doing a lot of running this year, according to Megyesi.
"Getting up and down the floor, then putting a shot up and getting back on defense," Megyesi said.
He added, the defense is the major focus this year.
"We've been really concentrating on the defense. We felt that was something we needed to work on from last year," Megyesi said, "Hopefully that will payoff."
