Stumped on what to do for Halloween? How about spending it at the Challenger Learning Center of Northwest Indiana?
Located on PUC's campus, the CLC is a space science education center. Ever since 1999, when its doors opened, children and adults alike have enjoyed learning about the Earth, moon and space through hands on science activity labs. More activities include viewing the planetarium, and most importantly doing e-missions and simulated missions into space and onto the moon.
On Thursday, October 29, there will be a simulated mission. For the second year in a row, the CLC will be hosting a public mission called Howlin' at the Moon.
"The purpose of the Howlin' at the Moon mission is to provide an opportunity for adults to come to our center to experience one of our simulated missions, just with a Halloween twist," said Amanda Maynard, executive director of the CLC. "This event is just one of the many events and programs that we offer to work toward our mission of fostering a long-term interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in the community."
A typical simulated mission at the CLC takes about two and a half hours. It is experienced in one of the two simulators which each have a mission control and a space craft area.
"During the simulated missions, participants become engineers and scientists as they work on teams to return to the moon," said Maynard. "In the simulators, they test their decision-making skills, solve problems and communicate by alternative means during the innovative space-themed science and math hands-on experience."
