In the only intramural that goes straight to the thighs, Delano Scaife defeated Sam Condes in double overtime to become the intramural cupcake eating champion.

Competitors had three minutes to eat as many Hostess cupcakes as they can with 12 cupcakes on their plate, unwrapped and ready to be eaten. Any additional cupcake had to be unwrapped by the competitor.

At the end of the competition, Delano Scaife and Sam Condes tied with 13 cupcakes, making overtime required.

Scaife, a sophomore in marketing said he got second place last year and wanted to get first this year.

Overtime meant Scaife and Condes had to try to eat two cupcakes as fast as they could; however overtime finished in a tie, causing the event to go into double-overtime.

In double-overtime both competitors raced to complete one cupcake. While the results were close, Condes was one swallow away from Scaife, making Scaife the champion.

"I didn't expect an overtime, let alone a double-overtime," said Matt Dudzik, the intramural sports coordinator.

Chris Dinell got third place, eating 12 cupcakes. Dinell, a senior in political science, said he loves to eat and wanted to try an eating competition because he had never tried one before.

Channeling the spirit of Takeru Kobayashi, one strategy contestants used was to dip the cupcake into water, making the chocolate treat easier to swallow and making a mess on the contrary.

Alex Starr, a freshman in biology, participated in the event despite her dislike of chocolate because she thought an event like this would be fun. Starr finished with three and one-fourth cupcakes completed.

Dudzik said the turnout of the competition was great, with more people showing up than people who originally signed up.

Last year, Condes won the Twinkie eating competition with 11 Twinkies.

Dudzik said they will continue with the Hostess family, with the options of HoHos, Suzy Q's and Ding Dongs being used in the future.
