After more than a year of construction, blood-boiling sweat and tears, University Village II, an expansion to PUC's University Village, is nearing completion, and the new building will be opening its doors just in time for the fall 2009 semester.

"Construction for Phase II began in spring of 2008 and will conclude in the next few weeks," said Chanda R. Hott, Director of Housing and Residential Education for the University Village.

According to a press release, University Village II is an L-shaped structure with 99 furnished apartment units and is directly east of PUC's original University Village that also has apartment-style living. University Village II will feature apartment suites comprised of a living room, kitchen, private bedrooms and semi-private bathrooms. There will be 86 four-bedroom units, 12 two-bedroom units and a one-bedroom unit for the assistant housing director.

University Village II is also built to accommodate numerous students.

Phase II has capacity for 369 residents said Hott.

With University Village I filling up past capacity and having to put people on waiting lists, University Village II will now be able to alleviate that problem.

"PUC wanted to build Phase II to address the ever-growing demand for on-campus housing," Hott said.

The University Village II community is planning to be just like the community for the original University Village.

"Phase II will provide many of the same amenities for residents of The University Village community as has Phase I over the last four years," said Hott. "The Housing and Residential Education staff will host many educational and social events in the different meeting spaces. We also provide tours to prospective students, parents and guests. On occasion, student organizations have requested to use meeting spaces for events or meetings."

Building the University Village has been cited as important to the students who want to experience living on a college campus.

"The University Village community presents a great opportunity for students to stay close to home, but still have the experience of living on a college campus," said Hott.

University Village is not just there to accommodate PUC's local students.

"The growing numbers of international students who attend PUC make this new structure critical," Chancellor Howard Cohen said in the April press release.

Officials said student housing has greatly benefited PUC.

"For the past three years, the overflowing demand for student housing has contributed to the growth and development of a vibrant campus," Melinda Dalgarn, Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs, said in the press release. "Student housing has transformed our campus in new and exciting ways. University Village II will provide us with necessary accommodations to meet the needs and expectations of students who, whether near or far, desire to earn a degree at Purdue Calumet."
